How's this for a heartwarming tale? The owner of this Astra GTE used to rally it back in the eighties; it's a Safety Devices-built car in pure competition spec. He started a family and locked the car away in storage, the kids taking priority over the hobby. Nineteen years later his son digs the car out, scrapes the dirt off and takes the old girl back to the stages. Cool, huh? You can read the full story here.

The TA22-generation Toyota Celica employed shamelessly Americanised styling to emphasise its overtly sporting focus, and the GTV was arguably the sportiest of the bunch. It came with the 1.6-litre twin-cam rather than the 2.0-litre, but featured firmer competition suspension and was stripped of such frivolities as electric windows and air-con to keep the weight down.
This example is super-retro, with its rear window louvres, SSR rims and wing-mounted mirrors. The under-bonnet area suggests that it means business too; the shiny tubular manifold, the strut brace, the twin carbs - period tuning for throaty, rev-happy fun.

For some unfathomable reason, the mkII Capri has taken quite a while to receive the recognition it deserves; eclipsed by the chromed retro chic of the mkI and the refinement of the mkIII, the gritty middle child has many of the pros of its younger/older brothers, but without the price-tag. (Well, comparatively speaking.)
And you certainly can't go wrong with a rumbling 3.0-litre Essex V6 - suckin' through carbs of course, none of that nancy Cologne fuel-injected nonsense - and a savagely begirthed X-Pack kit, swathed in lurid orange. Late-seventies Dagenham perfection.

One of the greatest sets of photos that SSBB's come across was this gallery of a BMW M1 Procar back in September '10. So it was pleasing to see that cncpics.com spotted one out and about in the wild, drawing an enthusiastic (and, most probably, priapic) gaggle of observers at the Christmas Eve Cars & Coffee meet. Seems faintly obscene that it's got a number plate on the back, doesn't it?

Given the ubiquity of the classic Mini, what can one do to stand out in the scene? Paint it pink? That's eye-catching, but you won't be the first. What you need is a little Californian twist: Rayvern hydraulics and 100-spoke chrome wires are enough to tip it over the edge... add in twin tanks, a Ducati Termignoni exhaust, a 1275cc Metro engine and a vast stereo install and you've got something really special.

The major stylistic alteration introduced with the DB6, in deference to its 007 forefather, was the Kamm-tail rear. So what happens if you take that bluff tail to its logical extreme? You get a slab-reared estate car; the style and elegance of Carrozzeria Touring's archetypal British grand tourer, with a chunkier glasshouse at the rear for transporting your garden waste. A jack of all trades, and master of all too, no?

The Jaguar XJR-9 is the iconic, breathtaking racer that broke Porsche's seven-year winning streak at Le Mans. The TWR-built Silk Cut big cat proved unstoppable, its 7.0-litre V12 roaring it comfortably to vingt-quatre heures victory in 1988.
