Merkur was Ford's attempt to flog a European model to the Americans. The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed that this Merkur XR4Ti is, er, a Sierra XR4i.
Well, not quite. The XR4Ti was built by Karmann, rather than at Ford's Cologne plant (for various complex export & safety regs reasons), and instead of the 2.8 V6 engine that the European XR4i had, it was fitted with a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-pot.
This particular XR4Ti has received a tickle or two from the modifying gladiolus. Both ends are adorned with Cosworth RS500 addenda (bumper at the front, whale-tail at the rear), with the whole coated in a Mercedes-Benz shade of orange. Under the bonnet, the engine has been stroked to 2.5-litres, with jumbo-sized injectors and a Turbonetics turbo. The 18" Compomotive MOs proudly showcase 6-piston AP Racing brakes with 14" rotors, while the running gear is resplendent in Cosworth upgrades. The best part of the build, of course, is that the majority of Americans who see it will have absolutely no idea what it is...
