Volkswagen Vision Gran Turismo GTI Roadster

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

Volkswagen's take on the Gran Turismo 'Vision GT' concept is wonderfully odd. The GTI Roadster is the bastard child of a Golf GTI and an Exocet missile, with lashings of savage Lamborghini-esque angles thrown in for good measure. It may have more than a few Golf styling cues - much of the nose, for a start, and that retro GTI logo emblazoned upon the pokey-out side repeater thingies - but it's basically a hooligan roadster from the future, sent back in time to terrify children and supercars alike.
It's powered by a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo, V6 TSI Touareg motor that yelps out 500bhp, enough to propel the 1,420kg poppet from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds. That's very quick indeed. And it looks absolutely barking mad too, doesn't it? It's a shame that there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of anything like this being added to the showroom Golf range - it'd certainly be a hit among the cash-rich supercar set.
